Preface
by Jeff Hemphill

The lecture contents, text and graphics, originated from the materials that Dr. John E. Estes
collected while he was a professor in the UCSB Geography Department. He taught Introduction
to Air Photo Interpretation and Remote Sensing (115A). During his tenure he amassed thousands
of slides and numerous pages of handwritten and typed notes. He passed away suddenly in
March of 2001.

Through this class, hundreds of people learned about Remote Sensing, it was in fact one of my
first Geography classes. I took it upon myself to try to preserve his teaching legacy because
he influenced, inspired and encouraged so many people. I spent five years under his supervision
and I learned Air Photo Interpretation from him. What he taught me, and his lecture materials,
are what the contents of this webpage are intended to preserve.

Please feel free to contact me or Dr. Keith Clarke regarding this class. Dr. Clarke is now the
professor for this course, he and Jack were good friends. I have helped him develop the lectures
and labs for the class. Any questions, inquiries, suggestions or general comments can be
directed to either myself or him. Thank you.
